Concrete City
Olivia joined me for this adventure to the ruins of Concrete City in Nanticoke, Pa. It was a series of houses that were built in 1911 for employees of the area railroad coal division. Each home was completely built out of concrete, from basement to the roof. It was a new type of architecture known as International style. I understand from reading that there is another one of these communities that was built but like this it is no longer inhabited. Concrete City consisted of 20 duplex homes and a concrete pool in the center of the development. The weeds were so over grown that if the pool still existed we didn't see it. Above is what it looked like orginally. (picture comes from uncoverpingpa.com) It is now consisted a historial site.
So to start off there is no place to offically park. There is a dirt road that will take you to the development but the potholes were so deep that you would definitely lose a tire or a small car. We parked on the side of the road and walked in. I read somewhere there are many places to gain access but the best is if you take the road and walk all the way to the back of the city it has the easiest access point. And it really does, the other places you would be sliding down the side of the hill.
Each house was covered in graffiti and each one was done, over and over. As an example of the graffiti on the constant change, while there we took a picture of this beautifully done face, 10 minutes later we saw the face again on the way back to the car and it had been tagged. What a shame that he covered it up.
Here are other shots of things we came across. I will note that a lot of the sayings/graffiti I have no knowledge of what exactly they say or mean. But the beauty in the chaos of the graffiti is memerizing. I think I could go back again and again and never see the same thing twice.
And then we found these deep mud holes and they were full of these fun little creatures. Alot of them were just floating around in the "pond' on this beautiful day.
Until the next adventure, Happy travelling,
Kelli
