Myrtle Beach

Timeline in the creation of Myrtle Beach

* 16th Century: The Waccanamaw and Winyah Indians named the region “Chicora” meaning land. The roadway we call Kings Highway was originally a Indian trail. As The Europeans settled in the colonies that Indian Trail connected the northern states to Savannah (through Charleston of course). There isn’t much written history of the Indians in this area but there are artifacts proofing their existence in the area.

* 1900’s: The town was virtually uninhabited due to the poor economy and geographical inaccessibility. Then came BURROUGHS & COLLINS COMPANY. They began to develop the area into a resort. A Beach front hotel named Seaside Inn. The ocean front lots were $25 and the company created an incentive of a second lot if the house you built was valued at least $500.  The company wanted to change the town name from Long Bay to something else. So they had a contest for the name. I’m not sure if there was some insider trading going on or not but the wife of F .E. Burroughs won with here “Myrtle Beach.” She got her inspiration from the myrtle trees that grow along the shore.

* 1920’s: The first upscale resort was built named “Arcady”, it added the first Strand Golf Club (1927 - Pine Lake International Country Club)

* 1930’s: area became incorporated, The Ocean Forest Hotel opened, and intracoastal waterway was opened

* 1940’s & 1950’s: steady growth of industrialization, business came to town, Myrtle Beach Air Force base was constructed, and the Kings Highway was paved.

*1954: birthplace of Sports Illustrated, Hurricane Hazel destroyed but they rebuilt it. New golf course befit now totally 115.

*1957: becomes a city

1960’s: Resorts created the packaging of hotel and golf

1970’s: Tradition for the old style of vacationing to the more modern family destination, airport starts to bring in more tourists

1980’s: Entertainment venues, Hurricane Hugo destroyed but again they rebuilt it.

Ok but so that is all I’ve got but I will say I just went to Myrtle Beach for the friends.

See you at the next bend in the road,

Kelli
