Hunting Island State Park

 Destination Awaits:  So after a long day of driving from Mt. Pleasant to Battle of River Bridges to Lake Warren and down to Beaufort. I hit the last of today’s state parks. This is park #9 only 35 more to go. At least I have until April of next year, plenty of time. Address: 2555 sea island parkway, Hunting Island, SC Just the facts (brief History): *5 miles of beach, turtles nesting areas are cordon off for protection *Got its name because it was once used for hunting deer, waterfowl, and raccoon. I didn’t see any of those wild animals but did see an alligator trying to cross the road. *Original lighthouse built in 1859 but destroyed in the civil war.  *rebuilt in 1875. Built with removable cast iron plates so air could be moved and rebuilt if necessary *1889 erosion led to it being dismantled and relocated *remained active until 1933 *currently the lighthouse is closed due to repairs. Chapel at Ease

Destination awaits: After exploring the ruins of Old Sheldon Church I drove through Beaufort and found these ruins. It had a different vibe than the first one.  Address:   Lands End Road, St Helena Island, SC Just the facts (brief history): *built in 1740 for a Christian worshipers on the island. (Plantation owners) *Chapel of Ease due to the hardship is would have been to trek to the St. Helena Church in Beaufort. *made of tabby walls *during the civil war plantation owners left, leaving slave to fend for themselves. They were no longer enslaved but also not free. *Northern missionaries came down to help educate and gaining support from the federal government in the “port royal experiement” * Burned in a forest fire in 1886 *added to the historic landmarks in the 1980’s *found down the street from the Penn School . (African American cultural & educational center) Tips to know before going: * look up what tabby walls is made from * look up the port royal experiment * Read somewhere

Old Sheldon Church Ruins

Destination Awaits :  Old Sheldon Church is on Fotospot app I’ve been using to find places that are off the beaten path. This is on the way to Beaufort,SC. It can’t be described because will fail. It’s quiet, and serene. I could have hung out there just sitting on one of the benches for hours. Address: Old Sheldon Church Road, Yemassee, SC (about 2 miles off the highway) Just the Facts (brief history): * built 1745-1755 * Primarily paid for by the Lt. Gov. William Bull I (1683-1755), he’s buried on the property *Partially burned during the American Revolution by the British in 1779 *Roof rebuilt in 1825 *Burned by the Federal Army in 1865 under the direction of General Sherman *There is a letter that states it wasn’t burned but was gutted to use the materials to rebuilt homes that were destroyed during the war Tips to know before going: *map it out * Look up Governor William Bull. Battle At Rivers Bridge

Destination Awaits:  The State Park of todays destination we go back in time to the civil war. This is the only historic site in SC that preserves a civil war battlefield in the state park system.  Address: 325 State Park Road, Ehrhardt, SC 29081 Just the facts (brief History): * Battle took place Feb 2-3, 1865 (Final months of the civil war) * 1,200 confederate soldiers took a stand on the Salkehatchie River against Maj. Gen Sherman’s about 5,000 troops. * Union soldiers crossed the swollen swamp on both ends of the confederate line to win the battle. Tips to know before going: * See when the guided tour is available (Saturday with a fee) * read up on the battle  *  Here are a few names of soldiers from the battle. Edisto Beach State Park

  Destination Awaits: Today the group went out to Botany Bay Preserve and Edisto Beach State Park. We only went to the beach part, so I will need to go back and walk the nature trail. Address: 8377 State Cabin Road, Edisto Island, SC Just the Facts (brief history): *one of four oceanfront parks *have 4 miles of ADA accessible trails Tips to know before going: *bug spray *print map of the park *don’t forget your car pass (they are not to friendly with the bottom half only) *check out the tide schedule  What to do while there: *go to the Environmental Center  *Take a walk on the beach. Picking seashells is allowed but leave the wildlife alone! *take a hike *go to Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve *See the sea turtles  *walk around the area, and eat a Whaley’s at 2801 Myrtle Street. Day of exploring SC

DESTINATION AWAITS:  Today we hit several SC state Parks (Poinsett and Santee) We hiked one of the trails. Beautiful countryside. It is known as the “mountains of the midlands.” I can see why. It was hilly and definitely we were out of the lowcountry. There was various things to see: a pond where you could swim or canoe. There are a dozen or so different hiking trails of different levels. Went to Buc-cee’s in FLorence. This was not the day to go because it seemed everyone on route 95 south and north also wanted to check out buc-cee’s too. Also in FLorence we stopped at the store Rival A house Divided.
