Old Sheldon Church Ruins

Destination Awaits

Old Sheldon Church is on Fotospot app I’ve been using to find places that are off the beaten path. This is on the way to Beaufort,SC. It can’t be described because will fail. It’s quiet, and serene. I could have hung out there just sitting on one of the benches for hours.

Address: Old Sheldon Church Road, Yemassee, SC (about 2 miles off the highway)

Just the Facts (brief history):
* built 1745-1755
* Primarily paid for by the Lt. Gov. William Bull I (1683-1755), he’s buried on the property
*Partially burned during the American Revolution by the British in 1779
*Roof rebuilt in 1825
*Burned by the Federal Army in 1865 under the direction of General Sherman
*There is a letter that states it wasn’t burned but was gutted to use the materials to rebuilt homes that were destroyed during the war

Tips to know before going:
*map it out
* Look up Governor William Bull. He has an interesting history with Savannah

What to do there:
*park across the street
*just be one with the area, it is not a playground to fool around
*check out the graves

See you at the next bend in the road,
Kelli
