Edisto Beach State Park

Destination Awaits:

Today the group went out to Botany Bay Preserve and Edisto Beach State Park. We only went to the beach part, so I will need to go back and walk the nature trail.

Just the Facts (brief history):
*one of four oceanfront parks
*have 4 miles of ADA accessible trails

Tips to know before going:
*bug spray
*print map of the park
*don’t forget your car pass (they are not to friendly with the bottom half only)
*check out the tide schedule 



What to do while there:
*go to the Environmental Center 
*Take a walk on the beach. Picking seashells is allowed but leave the wildlife alone!
*take a hike
*See the sea turtles 
*walk around the area, and eat a Whaley’s at 2801 Myrtle Street. Edisto Island

 Destination Awaits:  So after a long day of driving from Mt. Pleasant to Battle of River Bridges to Lake Warren and down to Beaufort. I hit the last of today’s state parks. This is park #9 only 35 more to go. At least I have until April of next year, plenty of time. Address: 2555 sea island parkway, Hunting Island, SC Just the facts (brief History): *5 miles of beach, turtles nesting areas are cordon off for protection *Got its name because it was once used for hunting deer, waterfowl, and raccoon. I didn’t see any of those wild animals but did see an alligator trying to cross the road. *Original lighthouse built in 1859 but destroyed in the civil war.  *rebuilt in 1875. Built with removable cast iron plates so air could be moved and rebuilt if necessary *1889 erosion led to it being dismantled and relocated *remained active until 1933 *currently the lighthouse is closed due to repairs. Day of exploring SC

DESTINATION AWAITS:  Today we hit several SC state Parks (Poinsett and Santee) We hiked one of the trails. Beautiful countryside. It is known as the “mountains of the midlands.” I can see why. It was hilly and definitely we were out of the lowcountry. There was various things to see: a pond where you could swim or canoe. There are a dozen or so different hiking trails of different levels. Went to Buc-cee’s in FLorence. This was not the day to go because it seemed everyone on route 95 south and north also wanted to check out buc-cee’s too. Also in FLorence we stopped at the store Rival A house Divided. Miles Brewton House

Miles Brewton was born in 1731 in Charleston. His father was a goldsmith and was associated with the city's banking and financial circles in town.  Miles Brewton gained the property at 27 King Street through as they say "by a good marriage" to Mary Izard.  Since I will not sugar coat history, he was south Carolina's biggest slave trader, owning 8 trading ships, and wealthiest man in the area. In 1765 he started construction on the Georgian Palladian brick home. By the time of the beginnings of the Revolutionary War he owner several indigo and rice plantations. Miles was a highly successful merchant and plantation owner of the era and was elected to the second congress in 1775. Sadly, he and his family were lost at sea when the ship they were traveling on when down during their trip to the north to Philadelphia.  His sister, Rebecca Brewton Motte inherited the home.
